The art of GradFlix: To show them or to snow them?

This workshop focuses on communicating complex research to general audiences, including a Q&A with award-winning students from Canada and the U.S. and an examination of GradFlix videos.
Topics will include writing scripts, directing plays, running commercial exhibition booths, and coaching award-winning presentation finalists. Speakers touch on story, first impressions, ethics, citation, subtext, authenticity, articulation, script design, images, staging, filming, editing, audio, and respecting your audience.

- John Bandler, OC, McMaster professor emeritus, is an award-winning engineer, entrepreneur, innovator, researcher, artist, speaker, and author of fiction, including stage plays and a film. See YouTube. He has published 500+ papers; sold his start-up to Hewlett-Packard; pioneered space mapping; is an Officer of the Order of Canada; and winner of the Professional Engineers Ontario 2018 Gold Medal. He has coached hundreds of individuals for presentations, and initiated and co-organized 3MT competitions, including the continuing 3MT at a major IEEE conference.
- Megan Vierhout is a PhD student in the Medical Sciences program at McMaster. Her research focuses on investigating the possible causes of a rare fatal lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. During her graduate studies, Megan has received multiple presentation awards and competed as a finalist in both McMaster’s GradFlix and 3MT competitions. She has served as a judge for the Electrical & Computer Engineering virtual 3MT competition.
