Grad Writing Consultants (GWC)

Writing is a key component for academic success. Our goal is to help Graduate Students and Postdocs become better writers. Academic writing is something that can be improved with practice and attention. Whether you’re writing a paper for your first grad course, drafting your Phd dissertation, or anything in between, GWCs are here to support you. This service is no cost to students.

What is a Grad Writing Consultant?

Graduate Writing Consultants support McMaster Masters and PhD students with

  • dissertation/thesis
  • proposals
  • thesis drafts
  • dissertation chapters
  • abstracts
  • conference papers
  • seminar papers or other
  • papers for coursework
  • journal articles
  • writer's block
  • and more

GWCs do not edit or proofread. Rather, GWCs help writers become better editors of their own work.

How long is a consultation?

  • Consultation appointments are 45 minutes long and must be booked in advance using our our online booking system.
  • Due to demand for this program, consultations are limited to one appointment per week to a maximum of eight appointments per term.

Drop-in sessions available *NOTE: DROP-IN HOURS ARE CANCELLED MAY 2 & 9.  DROP-IN HOURS WILL RESUME on MAY 16

  • You can drop by the GWC office for a mini-consult – which lasts about 20 minutes – on Wednesday afternoons, 1 to 3 p.m.
  • The office is located in Mills Library, room 213D.

Please note: If the drop-in session is busy, you may need to wait.

Cancellation Policy for booked appointments

  • You must provide 24 hours of notice if you need to cancel your appointment.
  • If you fail to show up or cancel your appointment, your access to the graduate writing consultant service may be restricted.
