U21-PwC Innovation Challenge

October 31, 2018

Take the U21/PwC Innovation Challenge

Apply your knowledge to real-world situations in the U21/PwC Innovation Challenge.

McMaster PhD and Masters students (course- and research-based) have an opportunity to showcase their critical thinking skills and share their ideas with leaders in graduate career development – PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and its clients – in this online competition.

The Challenge, organized by Universitas 21 (U21) and partner PwC, allows students to respond to contemporary work-related issues (set by PwC) in a three-minute video. Videos are judged by PwC and its clients.

The Challenge for McMaster graduate students

We are living through a fundamental transformation in the way we work; automation and "thinking machines" are replacing human tasks, changing the skills that organizations are looking for in their people. But what will the future look like? PwC has developed four scenarios in their Workforce of the Future study: a Red World where innovation rules; a Blue World where corporate is king; a Green World where companies care, and a Yellow World where humans come first.

Assuming you find yourself on a journey that looks like it ends in a "Green and Yellow Worlds" scenario where Companies Care and Humans Come First, what are the pros and cons for you? What skills will be important for individuals to thrive in this world, and how do you plan on adapting to it?

How does the competition work?

  • A preliminary adjudication will take place at McMaster and the top video(s) will be entered into the U21/PwC competition.
  • Deadline for students to upload their videos for adjudication at McMaster: November 19, 2018 midnight. All adjudication decisions are final.
  • McMaster students competing in the Challenge must upload their finished videos to a MacDrive folder.
  • The competition is open to current (registered) graduate students at McMaster.
  • Students should review the Innovation Challenge rules on the U21 website before filming their video and submitting. You will also find winning submissions from an earlier Innovation Challenge available for viewing.
  • Please review all information pertaining to intellectual property and the Innovation Challenge.

McMaster University can submit up to three videos in the U21/PwC competition. Students should not submit videos directly to the U21/PwC competition.

Innovation Challenge Prizes

U21 member institutions are broken into three groups for this competition; McMaster is in Group B.

The Innovation Challenge winner from Group B is awarded

  • an expenses-paid trip to Dubai (7 days) courtesy of PwC where they will get the chance to explore the city and also see some of the innovative projects taking place there; and
  • an internship opportunity with either PwC or a locally based client.

Runners-up (2) receive career development coaching with the PwC Academy.

All approved entrants submitted Group B in the U21/PwC Innovation Challenge (not the local University competition) receive access to online training via the PwC Academy and Coursera; the assessment and certificate fees will be covered by PwC.

What is Universitas 21 (U21)?
