Students are required to complete two courses: one required core course plus one elective course. Depending on course selection, students may complete the certificate in as little as one academic term.
SCICOMM 701 – Foundations in Science Communication (Required)
Introduction to core concepts, theories, and practices in science communication. Online (virtual, synchronous).
SCICOMM 702 – Creative Project in Science Communication (Elective)
Develop an original science communication product for a specific audience. Remote, with faculty supervision.
SCICOMM 703 – Science Communication Research Project (Elective)
Conduct a research project examining science communication strategies or challenges. Remote, with faculty supervision.
SCICOMM 704 / GEOG 721 – Narratives of Science (Elective)
Explore storytelling as a tool for communicating scientific knowledge. In-person.
This flexible delivery format allows students to complete the certificate alongside graduate studies or professional commitments, while gaining practical and applied experience in science communication.
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- communicate scientific ideas to diverse audiences;
- analyze how science is represented in media and society;
- develop communication strategies for specific audiences and goals;
- create ethical and engaging science communication products;
- apply interdisciplinary perspectives to science communication challenges;
