How to enrol in – and complete – SGS 101 and 201

What are SGS 101 and 201?

All McMaster Graduate students, including part-time students, exchange students and visiting students must complete and pass the two mandatory training courses as part of their degree requirements – SGS 101 and SGS 201. All Graduate students must complete these courses once during their academic journey at McMaster. You can find detailed information in the Graduate Calendar.

Students must enrol in and complete the following:

  • SGS 101 Academic Research Integrity and Ethics
  • SGS 201 Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

These mandatory courses must be completed within the first month of their first term after admission. Students are admitted into one of three terms in the academic year. The deadline to complete SGS 101 and 201 are:

  • Fall – September 30
  • Winter – January 31
  • Spring/Summer – May 31

Following the above dates, the grades will be added in batch onto the students record. If an F grade is received in either of the courses, a negative service indicator will be added onto the student’s record indicating which course needs to be retaken and that it must be done immediately. Failure to do so will result in a negative service indicator that will block enrolment the following year when enrolment opens. Service Indicators will appear in the Student Centre at the top right-hand corner:

Students can retake SGS 101 and 201 until they receive a passing grade; there is no limit. Grades will be reviewed weekly and the students record will be updated in Mosaic with the negative service indicator being removed.
