Overview
The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and McMaster are working together to provide:
- opportunities and support to Chinese graduate students interested in pursuing their PhD studies at McMaster or conduct research as visiting PhD students.
Successful candidates are expected to return to China after completing their studies.
Who is eligible to receive funding?
The China Scholarship Council – McMaster University joint funding program provides scholarships and placements to:
Students studying for their PhD at McMaster
Up to 15 selected Chinese students who meet candidate eligibility requirements as prescribed by the CSC and McMaster, in accordance with University rules, policies and take McMaster’s PhD research programs each year for up to 48 months. If the selected Chinese students successfully complete the requirements of the designated program and successfully defend their dissertation, they will be conferred doctoral degrees by McMaster.
Visiting PhD students
Each year, selected visiting PhD students from China will conduct studies and research for up to 24 months at McMaster. These visiting students will facilitate continuing research collaboration between McMaster and their home institutions.

All academic programs/fields of study offered by McMaster are open to eligible Chinese applicants, subject to availability.
CSC Value
PhD students
- CSC provides a living allowance, including health insurance, as regulated by the Chinese Government for up 48 months, a one-time return international airfare and visa application fees.
- McMaster funding is equivalent to the cost of full tuition. This McMaster funding may include scholarship, teaching assistantship or research assistantship.
Visiting PhD students
- CSC provides a living allowance, including health insurance, as regulated by the Chinese Government for up to 24 months, a one-time return international airfare and visa application fees.
- McMaster waives the tuition fee for visiting PhD students within the CSC program.
- The specific amount, model, rights and obligations of funding is subject to a written agreement between the parties and the successful candidate.
Additional resources
McMaster will provide all necessary resources and equipment to visiting PhD students and visiting scholars. This could include office, laboratory, computer, network, library access, etc.
How to apply for CSC
Chinese universities and institutions that have collaborative relationships with McMaster are encouraged to recommend students and faculties for this program.
PhD students
- Students must apply directly to a McMaster graduate program, through the usual application process. Visit How to apply for more information about applying to McMaster. Program application deadlines vary. Please visit Programs for more details.
- To receive China Scholarship Council funding, a student must be in receipt of an official offer of admission to a McMaster program.
- McMaster will evaluate candidates; acceptance decisions are made at the discretion of McMaster University. Deadlines vary according to program. Please visit Programs for more details.
- Applicants must specifiy in their applications that they apply through the “China Scholarship Council – McMaster University Joint Funding Program.”

The China Scholarship Council will evaluate candidates. Successful candidates will be contacted by the CSC directly.
Visiting PhD students
- To receive China Scholarship Council funding, visiting PhD students must have an official invitation from McMaster University.
- When applying to the CSC, visiting PhD students must specifiy that they are applying through the “China Scholarship Council – McMaster University Joint Funding Program.”
